Increasing terrestrial ecosystem carbon release in response to autumn cooling and warming

چکیده

Abstract Part of the Northern Hemisphere has experienced widespread autumn cooling during most recent decades despite overall warming, but how this contrasting temperature change influenced ecosystem carbon exchange remains unclear. Here, we show that occurred over about half area north 25° N since 2004, producing a weak trend period 2004–2018. Multiple lines evidence suggest an increasing net CO 2 release in In areas, is due to larger decrease gross primary productivity (GPP) growth than total respiration (TER) suppressed by cooling. warming TER increased more GPP because and wetting conditions are favourable for increase. Despite opposite trends, there been systematic increase across middle high latitudes.

Impact of 1998–2002 midlatitude drought and warming on terrestrial ecosystem and the global carbon cycle

[1] A rare drought occurred from 1998 to 2002 across much of the Northern Hemisphere midlatitude regions. Using observational data and numerical models, we analyze the impact of this event on terrestrial ecosystem and the global carbon cycle. The biological productivity in these regions was found to decrease by 0.9 PgC yr 1 or 5% compared to the average of the previous two decades, in conjuncti...

Robustness and uncertainty in terrestrial ecosystem carbon response to CMIP5 climate change projections

We have investigated the spatio-temporal carbon balance patterns resulting from forcing a dynamic global vegetation model with output from 18 climate models of the CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5) ensemble. We found robust patterns in terms of an extra-tropical loss of carbon, except for a temperature induced shift in phenology, leading to an increased spring uptake of carb...

Response to comment on “Climate legacies drive global soil carbon stocks in terrestrial ecosystem”

The technical comment from Sanderman provides a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of the mechanisms explaining the role of paleoclimate in the contemporary distribution of global soil C content, as reported in our article. Sanderman argues that the role of paleoclimate in predicting soil C content might be accounted for by using slowly changing soil properties as predictors. This i...

Carbon isotopes in terrestrial ecosystem pools and CO2 fluxes.

Stable carbon isotopes are used extensively to examine physiological, ecological, and biogeochemical processes related to ecosystem, regional, and global carbon cycles and provide information at a variety of temporal and spatial scales. Much is known about the processes that regulate the carbon isotopic composition (delta(13)C) of leaf, plant, and ecosystem carbon pools and of photosynthetic an...

Ecosystem assembly and terrestrial carbon balance under elevated CO(2).

Research aimed at understanding how the global carbon balance will change with elevated CO(2) has largely ignored the responses of individual species and genotypes. Yet, plant traits strongly influence the biogeochemical cycling of carbon. Here, we illustrate how differences in inter- and intraspecific responses to elevated CO(2) affect not only physiology and growth, but also higher order biot...
